Week 9, Fall 2019

SDCCD Distance Learning Summit

This Friday, October 18, 2019 from 8:30-4:30 is a chance to come together across the district and share ideas about distance learning. The line-up of workshops and presentations cover everything from the Online Education Initiative, a district-wide study on Challenges to Success in Online Classes, as well as hands-on tips about Humanizing the Online Experience and Canvas Features. Scroll down to find out more from Rechelle Mojica about SPACES (an online, self-paced training on Canvas).

We hope to see you there!

Canvas Hack: Dashboard Fun

Are you getting tired of seeing this on your Canvas dashboard: Fall 2019 - ENGL 205 (15088 - on_campus)

instead of the more logical: M/W ENG 205

There's an easy way to change that. You can give your Canvas course icon any nickname you want.

On the dashboard icon for your class, click on the three dot menu at the upper right hand corner. Type in any name you want in the Nickname slot. (You'll notice you can also color code the sections in this menu. I've used a photo--more on that in another post.)

Hit apply. There's your nickname! You can also drag and move icons so that they appear in the order that makes most sense to you.

The SPACES Flex Training Series
Professor Rechelle Mojica

We invite you to join the SPACES Flex Training Series. SPACES focuses on: Social Presence, Accessibility, Collaboration, Engagement for Students. Digital tools such as Zoom, Clips, Adobe Spark, WAVE Web Accessibility, Mind Mapping and many more are explored.

The series is fully online through Canvas and self-paced with no time or place restrictions. Explore modules designed to increase digital learning for face-to-face, hybrid, and online courses. Each module focuses on one area and includes a video introduction, examples, activities, links and resources. Upon successful completion of a short quiz, you will earn one of our SPACES Badges. You can complete one module or all of them and become a SPACES Superstar.

I had no idea that Google can convert text from a photo or a PDF to a Google Doc.

A fun thread: What do you do outside academia that may improve, inspire or contribute to your teaching and makes you happy?
